AUSTRALIAN STRATEGIC POLICY INSTITUTE - Tuesday, September 01 @ 12pm Australian Eastern Standard Time (UTC+10)
The virtual book launch of ‘Under Beijing’s Shadow’ by Murray Hiebert
Murray Hiebert, Senior Associate of the Southeast Asia Program at CSIS, will join ASPI’s Dr Huong Le Thu in conversation to discuss his latest publication and take audience questions. In his book ‘Under Beijing’s Shadow’, Hiebert discusses how China’s rise and stepped-up involvement in Southeast Asia have prompted a blend of anticipation and unease among its smaller neighbours. The stunning growth of China has yanked up the region’s economies, but its militarisation of the South China Sea and dam building on the Mekong River has nations wary about Beijing’s outsized ambitions. This compelling book provides a snapshot of ten countries in Southeast Asia by exploring their diverse experiences with China and how this impacts their perceptions of Beijing’s actions and its long-term political, economic, military and ‘soft power’ goals in the region.

Webinar
S. RAJARANTAM SCHOOL OF INTERNATIONAL STUDIES - Friday 4th September @ 10am Singapore Time (UTC+8)
Why the Pakatan Harapan Government Fell and the Coalition’s Prospects for GE15
The Pakatan Harapan government led by Dr Mahathir Mohamad fell in February 2020, 22 months after coming into power, and was succeeded by the Perikatan Nasional government led by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin. The key players, their supporters, and observers have put forth their views on why and how PH fell. These narratives are shaping perspectives on the two coalitions’ prospects in the next General Elections, which is said to be likely called as early as the first half of 2021 although PM Muhyiddin has the option of seeking to serve out the full term of the 14th parliament, which ends in July 2023.
This webinar features Mr Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Parti Keadilan Rakyat MP and Mr Jahabar Sadiq, Editor and CEO of The Malaysian Insight.
