Towards a New Global Trade Framework
The CSIS Trade Commission on Affirming American Leadership has released a report on revitalizing U.S. trade leadership for the 21st century. The commission recommends action in three areas: the establishment of a new trade Compact to address 21st century trade issues, a pragmatic WTO reform agenda, and a review of the domestic US trade toolbox. Action in these three areas provide the foundation for an ambitious trade agenda that will position the US to remain a leader in shaping the global rules-based trading system. Join Senator William E. Brock, Ambassador Charlene Barshefsky, and Mr. William Alan Reinsch along with CSIS Senior Adviser Scott Miller to discuss the newly released report.

ASIA GLOBAL INSTITUTE - Tuesday, February 2 @ 5pm Hong Kong Time (UTC+8)
Leadership in a Post-Truth World
Good leadership is crucial to building trust in a society. This means competent governance, effective policymaking, and informed and sensible judgement. Rapid-fire communications, rushed news cycles and pervasive social media have ushered in a “post-truth” world, with money politics, tribalism, increasing inequality and populist movements leading to a severe breakdown in civility, community and the capacity for reform. The deadly and destructive invasion of the US Capitol by rioters was only the latest example of the dire crisis. In this webinar, Asia Global Fellows will discuss the global trust deficit and the challenge that leaders face in a time of truth decay. What does good leadership mean when the spread of fake news, conspiracy theories, alternative facts and lies breeds suspicion, cynicism, irrationality and even violence?

THE ENERGY AND RESOURCES INSTITUTE - Tuesday, February 2 and Wednesday, February 3 @ 12:30pm India Standard Time (UTC+5.30)
Opportunities and Challenges for a Blue Economy in the Asia-Pacific region in a COVID-19 world
There are numerous opportunities and challenges that stand before the Asia-Pacific Blue Economy framework that will greatly influence regional cooperation, resource security, science and technological cooperation and sustainable development. As oceans and coasts suffer from an almost uncensored exploitation due to factors like growing global population coupled with excessive industrialisation on the existing resource base, it is essential to tread on a sustainable path furthered by a blue economy. This becomes even more crucial for Asia-Pacific as it covers a major portion of land and sea coastline while also possessing some of the most ecologically and economically important sea areas of the world. As countries across the globe embark on the race to 2030, a tangible increase in the focus on oceans’ health can be observed in both international and national policies.

The Biden Administration’s Future Agenda
The Biden administration has a lot to tackle policy-wise, particularly around the public health crisis and the economy. But it can’t let the urgent needs of the present keep it from making progress on the future. Over the past few weeks, Future Tense has been publishing the Future Agenda, a series in which experts make their pitches for targeted, concrete accomplishments the Biden White House should pursue around such issues as broadband regulation and internet access; global health policy and pandemic prevention; and energy and policy change. Join us for an event that will take the ideas published in Future Agenda and examine what, how, and if the Biden administration will be able to do these things—and whether it can help us break the cycle of present-day crises keeping us from addressing longer-term issues.

ISEAS YUSOF ISHAK INSTITUTE - Wednesday, February 3 @ 10am Singapore Time (UTC+8)
Sino-Japanese Relations in the Post-Pandemic Era: Implications for Southeast Asia
The Sino-Japanese relationship is one of the most important for Asia and the world. Amid the trade war and intensified US-China rivalry, Trump’s “America First” foreign policy has further complicated Tokyo’s and Beijing’s respective strategic calculus. Yet Sino-Japanese relations have largely taken a turn for the better over the past year, as both Tokyo and Beijing appeared to have set aside their differences to focus on tackling the domestic challenges posed by the spread of Covid-19. This talk will take stock of recent developments in Sino-Japanese relations. It will also assess the opportunities and challenges for Beijing and Tokyo to grow their ties especially under the current Biden administration, and conclude with some thoughts on what this might mean for Southeast Asia.

GLOBAL TAIWAN INSTITUTE - Thursday, February 4 @ 12pm Eastern Standard Time (UTC-5)
Taiwan in 2021
The past four years have been nothing short of momentous for US-Taiwan relations. Amidst growing US-China tensions and mounting instability in the Taiwan Strait, the Trump administration took unprecedented steps to bolster the American relationship with Taipei. Now, under Biden, the US faces numerous challenges as it considers its approach to Taiwan, China, and the cross-Strait relationship. Will Biden continue his predecessor’s policies of aggressively challenging China while seeking stronger ties with Taiwan? Or will he take a different course, working to end the ongoing trade war and find common ground with Beijing, potentially at the expense of Taipei? How will Beijing attempt to reframe the Taiwan question with the Biden administration? This virtual panel will address these questions and attempt to forecast developments in Taiwan, China, and cross-Strait relations in 2021.

The Ox Year in the China Shop – Winning at Home and Abroad, and Embracing Global Elites
China came under heavy fire in the first half of 2020, with pushbacks at home and abroad for its initial handling of the COVID-19 outbreak as well as its thrust for regional dominance and global influence. But it has surfed that wave of disapproval and has resumed its course to achieve key communist party goals by retaining the backing of the elites that count, both within China and overseas. How is the PRC convincing its high-value elite partners that China’s interests are also genuinely in the best interests of their own country or organisation? What developments may the Year of the Ox bring? Join us to discuss the trends in sight for 2021.

TRANSNATIONAL INSTITUTE - Friday, February 5 @ 5pm Central European Time (UTC+1)
The Arab uprisings a decade on: Egypt and Tunisia
A decade ago on 14th January 2011, the Arab world released enormous energy, a collective effervescence, an unparalleled sense of renewal and a major shift in consciousness. Despite an amazing show of resilience and people power, these revolts faced considerable challenges and setbacks. The movements found themselves pitted against entrenched authoritarian and counter-revolutionary forces that were bent to crush them. But before we hurry to the aftermaths, and without declaring ‘revolutions’ the discursive property of a past tense, we intend to look back, to take stock precisely in order to look forward. This webinar is the first of a series and will focus on Tunisia and Egypt, the birthplace of the magnificent revolts. Join us to revisit these historical moments with some of the finest scholar-activists, participants and witnesses from those very contexts.
