Policy Events (Jan 04 - Jan 10)
Vaccine policy, US ties with India and Europe, urban governance and gender gaps in agriculture are some of the areas under discussion at think tank events next week.
Each week Policy People puts together a list of think tank events from around the globe. Below is our list for January 04 to January 10. There is a heavy focus on vaccine-related policy throughout next week’s events. There are two events that speculate on what US ties with India and Europe will be like under Biden as well as a couple looking at urban governance and gender gaps in agriculture. There is also a two-day online certificate course for young policy professionals, ‘e-Policy for Young Leaders’.

The recent changes that have been witnessed and the policies and programs that help in reducing the gender gap. This talk will be given by Prof. Surabhi Mittal, a senior agricultural economist with vast experience in management, analytical, development and policy-oriented research, including on food security, seed sector development and productivity analysis.

ASIA SOCIETY POLICY INSTITUTE - Thursday, January 7 @ 7:30pm Central Standard Time (UTC-6)
COVID-19 Vaccines: What to Expect in 2021
As COVID-19 vaccines become more widely available, new questions arise for scientists, public health officials, and government officials, who must coordinate to address vital next steps, including which countries and populations will be prioritized to receive the vaccine first. Which vaccine should people get, and will they be willing? How long can a vaccine guarantee immunity? What will be the cost? As 2021 begins, Dr. Barry Bloom, former Dean of the Harvard School of Public Health, joins Asia Society to answer these questions and discuss what to expect in the next few months.

WILSON CENTER - Thursday, January 7 @ 10am Eastern Standard Time (UTC-5)
Partners of First Resort: America, Europe, and the Future of the West
A struggle is currently being waged for the soul of the West: to determine whether America and Europe can recover instincts for joint action or if they are doomed to pursue divergent paths. Much damage has been inflicted during the past four years, but the election of Joe Biden as president augurs well for the prospect of potentially the most trans-Atlanticist administration in decades. Based on their book, Partners of First Resort: America, Europe, and the Future of the West, David McKean and Bart M. J. Szewczyk lay out a path for a trans-Atlantic renaissance to restore a community based on the same liberal objectives that animated the West and built a more peaceful, prosperous, and politically inclusive world order.

Urban Governance in China and India: Deconstructing issues of Land Grabs, Slum Clearance, and the War on Air Pollution
One-sixth of humanity now lives in either a Chinese or Indian city. Urbanization is rapidly overtaking the two most populous countries in the world. This transformation has unleashed enormous pressures on land use, housing and the environment. Despite the stakes, the workings of urban governance in China and India remain obscure and poorly understood. Xuefei Ren will talk about her new book Governing the Urban in China and India and discuss how the different styles of governance in the two countries have produced inequality and exclusion. This event is moderated by Dr Soumyadip Chattopadhyay, Senior Fellow at IMPRI.

CENTRE FOR STRATEGIC AND INTERNATIONAL STUDIES - Friday, January 8 @ 10am Eastern Standard Time (UTC-4)
Trusting a COVID-19 Vaccine: Who’s Left Unheard?
As COVID-19 cases rise across the US, many hope the approval of a vaccine may move America beyond the worst of the pandemic. Yet polls indicate public trust in a vaccine remains in doubt despite confidence-building measures by government officials, pharmaceutical companies, and social media platforms. Studies have shown that trust is particularly low among communities of color who have been disproportionally impacted by the pandemic. The event will focus on a recommendation proposing a campaign to better reach diverse and underserved populations with vaccines and other health and social services support, by integrating the delivery of COVID-19 vaccines into a broader platform of services.
