THE WILSON CENTER - Tuesday, January 12 @ 1pm Eastern Standard Time (UTC+5:30)
The Arctic and World Order
Long described as the world’s last frontier, The Arctic is quickly becoming the front line in a world of more diffuse power, sharper geopolitical competition and deepening interdependencies between people and nature. A bitterly cold space, the Arctic is also the fastest-warming place on earth and is humanity’s canary in the coal mine – an early warning sign of the world’s climate crisis. Join authors Daniel S. Hamilton and Kristina Spohr as they discuss their new book The Arctic and World Order with Einar Gunnarsson, Ambassador of Iceland and current Chair of Senior Arctic Officials at the Arctic Council.

FOREIGN POLICY RESEARCH INSTITUTE - Tuesday, January 12 @ 10am Eastern Standard Time (UTC+5:30)
China’s Influence over Rare Earth Elements
China has developed a near monopoly over Rare Earth Elements (REE), necessary components in cellphones, hard drives, hybrid vehicles and flat-screen TVs. But, as China’s influence over REE grows, many nations are searching for solutions that limit their environmental impact and exclude China from their production. This, in turn, is causing China to retaliate in uncertain ways. What exactly are these elements, how do they fit into the global supply chain, and why should we care that China has a monopoly over their extraction? What can be done about the environmental impact of REE mining? Join FPRI’s to explore these questions and yours in this event.

Taiwan and Indo-Pacific Regional Security Architecture Conference - Day 1
Taiwan is a key player in the Indo-Pacific and a leader in promoting civil society, religious freedom, women’s empowerment and gender equality, and cybersecurity, and widely shares its governance experience. For Taiwan’s regional contributions to keep growing, it must be more effectively integrated into the security architecture of the Indo-Pacific. Deeper engagement with Indo-Pacific countries, supported by the US, is critical to achieving that goal. Join the China Power Project on Tuesday, January 12 from 5:00 pm – 6:15 pm EST for a panel discussion on Taiwan and the Indo-Pacific regional security architecture, specifically focused on views from the US, Japan and Australia.

THE BROOKINGS INSTITUTE - Tuesday, January 12 @ 1pm Eastern Standard Time (UTC+5:30)
How We Rise: How social networks impact economic mobility in Racine, San Francisco, and Washington, DC
Across the U.S., economic mobility is frequently linked with geography. Some places afford poor children the opportunity to do better economically than their parents did, and other places do not. Social networks, providing access to support, information, power, and resources, are a critical and often neglected element of opportunity structures. Join us as we present the findings of a special paper and examine the role of social networks in economic mobility and equity in San Francisco, Racine, and Washington, DC. Panelists will explore the dynamics of social connections and policy solutions that can address equity goals.

ASIAN INSTITUTE OF DIPLOMACY & INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS - Saturday, January 16
Weathering the Storm: Nepal as a Regional Leader in Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation During the Climate Crisis
Nepal faces many multi-dimensional climate threats, include threats to food security, energy security, water security, environmental security, economic security and political security. Nepal is in a unique position in terms of hydrological resources to cushion itself and the region within a certain range of hydrological extremes. For “hydro-corruption” and local resistance to be avoided, new inclusive approaches are required. Similarly, Nepal’s traditional economy has many aspects of a green circular economy still extant. This symposium will focus on quick ramp-up ways of maximizing Nepal’s innate strengths so as to become a regional climate leader in ways that benefit both itself and its region.
