S. RAJARANTAM SCHOOL OF INTERNATIONAL STUDIES - Tuesday, 25 May @ 10am, Singapore Time (UTC+8)
“Religious Hatred: Prejudice, Islamophobia, and Antisemitism in Global Context” by Dr Paul Hedges
Why does religion inspire hatred? Why do people in one religion sometimes hate people of another religion, and also why do some religions inspire hatred from others? This book shows how scholarly studies of prejudice, identity formation, and genocide studies can shed light on global examples of religious hatred. The book is divided into four parts, focusing respectively on: theories of prejudice and violence; historical developments of antisemitism, Islamophobia, and race; contemporary Western antisemitism and Islamophobia; and, prejudices beyond the West in the Islamic, Buddhist, and Hindu traditions. The book focuses on antisemitism and Islamophobia, both in the West and beyond, including examples of prejudices and hatred in the Islamic, Hindu, and Buddhist traditions. Drawing on examples from Europe, North America, MENA, South and Southeast Asia, and Africa, Paul Hedges points to common patterns, while identifying the specifics of local context.

EUROPEAN INSTITUTE FOR ASIAN STUDIES - Wednesday, 26 May @ 1pm, Central European Summer Time (UTC+2)
The EU's Indo-Pacific Strategy: Stroking the Panda or Poking the Dragon?
Representing over 40 percent of global GDP and with 60 percent of global maritime trade passing through its seas, the Indo-Pacific is a crucial area for most economies across the globe, including the EU. Yet the region lacks an all-encompassing security structure and is facing rising geopolitical tensions. The EU’s recently launched Indo-Pacific Strategy came about as a consensus between all 27 EU Member States to safeguard their interests in the region and to promote stability, democracy and international law. Following the lead of Germany, France and the Netherlands, the EU’s Strategy is setting the scope for its future engagement with the region. Prioritising sustainable development and climate change, health, connectivity, ocean management, research and technology, multilateralism, and a focus on regional organisations, the EU will increase its presence in the Indo-Pacific. This EIAS-UEA webinar will assess the EU’s Strategy for the Indo-Pacific in further detail, including its implementation, its potential impact, as well as current geopolitical, economic and strategic dynamics in the region.

NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR DEMOCRACY - Wednesday, 26 May @ 11am, Eastern Daylight Time (UTC+2)
The Rise of Digital Repression: How Technology is Reshaping Power, Politics, and Resistance
Amid the global proliferation of digital technology, state and local actors have more tools at their disposal to exert influence in their communities. For anti-democratic leaders, emerging technologies offer additional means to stifle dissent, deepen repression, and tighten their grip on state institutions. As citizens increasingly rely on online platforms for information, authoritarian regimes have managed to coopt digital technology to advance their own self-serving agendas. As authoritarian regimes exploit technological capabilities for their own malign ends, these developments have major implications for democracy and global governance. Civil society and democracy-support organizations must learn to counter repression and respond to creeping authoritarianism. Join the International Forum for Democratic Studies for a discussion with Steven Feldstein and Eileen Donahoe on Feldstein’s new book titled The Rise of Digital Repression: How Technology is Reshaping Power, Politics, and Resistance, which analyzes the challenges digital repression poses to the integrity of democratic systems globally.

ROYAL UNITED SERVICES INSTITUTE - Friday, 28 May @ 2pm British Summer Time (UTC+1)
Turkey’s Drones: Assessing Capability, Goals and Implications
What are Turkey’s calculations and ambitions for its military drones programme? What are the implications for regional conflicts from Turkey’s increased use of drones across the Middle East and North Africa? With its rapid expansion of domestic development and production, Turkey is increasingly considered an emerging drone power. Turkey’s use of armed UAVs in conflict zones such as Syria, Libya, Nagorno-Karabakh, northern Iraq and the Eastern Mediterranean has spurred the rise of drone warfare across the region. This shift is contributing to a regional environment in which countries intervene in conflicts with assumed lower risks and political ramifications, but with the ability to still project power and significantly influence developments on the ground.

THE CENTRE FOR INDEPENDENT STUDIES - Friday, 28 May @ 2pm Australian Eastern Standard Time (UTC+9)
Australia's China Policy Debate
China’s increasingly repressive rule at home and assertiveness abroad show few signs of moderating as it emerges from the Covid-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, Australian attitudes have hardened in the face of Beijing’s trade coercion and diplomatic taunts. The government has drawn lines to protect national sovereignty with new legislation and other measures. But is Canberra doing enough as the divergence between our values and security interests and those of our top trade partner grows starker? Does security trump prosperity, or are we risking our future prosperity by needlessly provoking the PRC?

Well-being among Thailand’s ‘Lost Generation’ of Students during the Covid-19 Pandemic in Southeast Asia
The Covid-19 pandemic has had a substantial impact on virtually every aspect of well-being across the world in various populations. It disrupts essential service provision in every sector, including education. Additionally, there are growing concerns that this Covid-19 crisis will potentially lead to a ‘lost generation’ of students due to widespread closures of education institutions at all levels. This comes in the wake of a sudden shift in education delivery approaches, such as the move from school/campus-based learning to online learning, as well as many other unexpected consequences arising from this pandemic. The Thai education system and its students have been profoundly affected by this situation.
