ASIA SOCIETY - Tuesday, November 3 @ 12.30pm Central European Time (UTC+1)
The Japanification of the World?
For decades, Japan has experienced low growth, low inflation, and low interest rates, largely driven by an ageing population – a phenomenon termed “Japanification”. While faster growth has remained elusive despite heavy stimuli, Japan has made headway in terms of labor productivity and technical innovation. The Japanese experience holds important lessons for other countries and regions – Europe first among them. What has caused Japanification? How has Japan addressed these challenges? And what can Europe and Switzerland learn from the experience? Yumiko Murakami, Head of the OECD Tokyo Centre, will join Jeffrey Bohn, Chief Research Officer of the Swiss Re Institute, for a remote conversation.

ASIA CENTRE - Wednesday, November 4 @ 3:15pm Indochina Time (UTC+7)
Countering the Coronavirus-related “Infodemic”: Sharing Best Practices
COVID-19’s “Infodemic” has created challenges for countries trying to counter disinformation, misinformation and information overload. COVID-19-related “fake news” is placing communities in very vulnerable positions resulting in risk to public health. In Thailand, the circulation of fake news about preventive measures, possible clusters and false reports of patients is rampant. Taiwan responded to fake news through a mixture of accountability and transparency, information correction and respect for human rights and the rule of law. Collectively, these factors have contributed to effective crisis communication, panic prevention and public trust in the government’s responses. This seminar shares best practices from both jurisdictions on how best to shield communities from the effects of this infodemic.

OBSERVER RESEARCH FOUNDATION - Thursday, November 5 @ 8:30am India Standard Time (UTC+5:30)
Infusing ethics into artificial intelligence
Ethics is foundational to AI. For all the good AI can bring, responsible tech companies must recognise, prepare for, and mitigate the technology’s potential harmful effects. Companies and organisations are increasingly offering programmes to help employees put ethics at the core of their respective workflows. These programmes are designed to empower the entire organisation to think critically about the process of building AI solutions, and most importantly — the effects on the end user. As organisations increasingly turn to technology in their response to COVID-19, it’s more important than ever that we continue advancing AI that is safe and inclusive.

The Korean Peninsula After the U.S. Election
President Trump’s first term in office sparked dramatic shifts in diplomacy in Northeast Asia, including historic summits with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un, protracted military negotiations with South Korea and rising strategic competition with China. What could the next four years look like for the region and what changes and might we anticipate from a Biden presidency? As Americans head to the polls, experts from the US, South Korea and Europe examine how foreign policy in the region will be impacted by the outcome of the election and how the US must face ongoing challenges such as how to rein in North Korea’s nuclear ambitions, navigate a rising China and restore fraying alliances.
