AMERICAN ENTERPRISE INSTITUTE - Monday, November 9 @ 12:30pm Eastern Time (UTC-4)
A hard look at the defense capabilities of allies and partners
While US administrations often criticize allies of falling short in contributing militarily, America’s security strategy is tied to its global network of allies and strategic partners. The global security environment has grown more complex, but the US military’s size has remained largely the same. Understanding what America’s allies and partners can (or cannot) bring to the table militarily is more important than ever. Join AEI to discuss these implications and mark the publication of the second edition of ‘A Hard Look at Hard Power: Assessing the Defense Capabilities of Key US Allies and Security Partners’, edited by AEI’s Gary J. Schmitt.

Our Society Reimagined 2020: Black Lives Matter and the Need for Political Activism

Join us for an opportunity to explore the domestic issues shaping our society and gain perspective on the underlying values and ideas that we hold in the Our Society Reimagined 2020 series.

NEW AMERICA - Tuesday, November 10 @ 12pm Eastern Time (UTC-4)
Governing for the Future
How do we govern for the long haul? Humans are manipulating the planet in ways that will play out for centuries, but our decision-making is often myopic and localized. The few concerted global responses to the climate crisis we have been able to muster are torturously slow, while the fires, floods and storms seem to get more deadly every year. Join us for a conversation about how we can use science fiction, storytelling and imagination to contend with the wicked problems of the twenty-first century and start thinking, planning and acting for the long term.

THE TURING INSTITUTE - Tuesday, November 10 @ 5:30pm GMT (UTC+0)
Data Debates: Bots in the polling booth
While AI can strengthen democracy and encourage government accountability, online misinformation campaigns are also fueling a rise in populism throughout democratic societies. As efforts to influence voters of all political persuasions become increasingly sophisticated, is there sufficient understanding of how AI is affecting democracy both for good and bad? What are the opportunities to improve and better safeguard democracy? And what is the role of governments, tech giants, and citizens in making sense of the role of AI in the future of democracy? Join our expert panel to discuss these questions and more at our virtual event.

FOREIGN POLICY RESEARCH INSTITUTE - Tuesday, November 10 @ 2pm Eastern Time (UTC-5)
America in the World - A History of US Diplomacy and Foreign Policy
Recounting the actors and events of U.S. foreign policy, Robert Zoellick identifies five key traditions: the importance of North America; the special role trade plays in defining ties with others; changing attitudes toward alliances and ways of ordering connections among states; the need for public support; and the belief that American policy should serve a larger purpose. These traditions frame a closing review of post-Cold War presidencies, which Zoellick foresees serving as guideposts for the future. Both a sweeping work of history and an insightful guide to U.S. diplomacy past and present, America in the World serves as an informative companion and practical adviser to readers. In this event, FPRI’s Director of the Center for the Study of America and the West Ronald Granieri will interview Zoellick on the strategic and immediate challenges of U.S. foreign policy during an era of transformation.

ASIA SOCIETY - Tuesday, November 10 @ 6:30pm Daylight Saving Time (UTC+11)
The Giant Next Door – China In Southeast Asia
Nowhere in the world is China’s emergence of economic, military and cultural presence more apparent than in Southeast Asia, whose nations vary greatly in their response to Beijing. Southeast Asia is once again becoming the focus of a global contest for power. What are the historical turning points of China’s experience in Southeast Asia since the 1970s? Why is this region attractive to China and vice versa? What role does ASEAN play in shaping Southeast Asia’s policy towards China? And how much space for maneuver do Southeast Asian nations have with the region having become an arena for U.S.-China competition, with influences from Japan, India, South Korea, Russia and Australia? THE ENERGY AND RESOURCES INSTITUTE - Thursday, November 12 @ 5pm India Standard Time (UTC+5:30)
Global Climate Politics in an Era of Disruption: Insights from the US, EU and China
With the COVID-19 crisis, While governments have focused on the short-term challenges of economic stabilization and stimulus, long-term considerations like structural economic change, inequality and climate change also loom large. Recent announcements by China committing to net zero emissions by 2060, and political processes in the EU aiming at enhancing the EU's 2030 target and enshrining a net zero target by 2030, represent major breakthroughs. Several energy scenarios suggest that with the COVID-19 economic hit and accelerating technology innovation and policy action, the world could already have reached peak CO2 emissions. This is encouraging, but not enough. In this context, the coming U.S. election will be closely watched. The objective of this event is to provide an update on global climate politics and sub-national climate action in the light of the results of the US elections, and recent developments in major emitters.
